Harbour Town receives SA Health Smoke-free Air Award

31 May 2012

Harbour Town Adelaide’s efforts to reduce exposure to passive smoking by implementing a smoking ban have been awarded at the SA Health Smoke-free Air Awards 2012 announced this morning.

Coinciding with World No Tobacco Day, Harbour Town received the Excellence in Leadership and Innovation award for providing a healthy, smoke-free environment for its customers.

“It is no secret that second-hand smoke or passive smoking causes problems for people, and since Harbour Town went smoke-free last December, we have been improving the health of children and families in our community,” Harbour Town Adelaide Centre Manager Mrs Tania Rucioch says.

“Our smoke-free policy has received overwhelming support from the community and we have had very few incidences of people smoking inside our centre, and those who were smoking were more than happy to do their bit and butt-out,” Tania says.

Minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, the Hon John Hill said, Harbour Town’s focus on providing a family-friendly environment had been enhanced by its smoke-free policy.

“The centre’s no smoking ban was an early Christmas present for the 45,000 shoppers who visit Harbour Town Adelaide every week. Thank you, Harbour Town, for demonstrating strong leadership in this area.”

Heart Foundation Chief Executive Dr Amanda Rischbieth also congratulated Harbour Town for its Smoke-free Air Award.

“Smoke-free areas including retail precincts not only protect people from second-hand smoke but also aid in supporting smokers who are trying to reduce or give up smoking” she said.

Harbour Town erected signage around the centre in October 2011 to give shoppers advance notice of the incoming ban and butt-bins inside the mall were removed when to ban was implemented. The SA Health Smoke-free Air Awards publicly recognise and celebrate the achievements of organisations that have made an exceptional contribution to increasing outdoor smoke-free environments in South Australia.
